The main components of Proteus Design Suite
This software includes two main components around which the program's entire functioning revolves:
- ISIS: the acronym of Intelligent Schematic Input System. The program that allows us to carry out the electric design of the circuit, including all sorts of components such as resistors, coils, capacitors, power supplies and even microprocessors.
- ARES: the acronym of Advanced Routing and Editing Software. It's the tool aimed at the design of printed circuit boards or PCBs, with routing, location and editing functions for electronic components.

That's the eternal doubt for students and electronics professionals when it comes to choosing a program to simulate electronic circuits and, as always, there's no such thing as a universal answer that satisfies them all because it basically depends on the use given to the application.
For instance, if you're looking for a program for the analog and digital simulation of circuits, the product developed by National Instruments Corporation may suit your needs since it's the best software in this category. However, if you're more into simulating microprocessors, Multisim probably lacks the basics you're looking for and that's where Proteus comes in since it includes loads of libraries that allow you to simulate different models. So each one is good at different things and it's up to you to choose.

My experience installing ISIS on a Windows 7 64-bit platform: *** 1) I downloaded the installer “namasol.exe” and launched it. The installation seemed to start normally but then I received this error: “ An error occurred during the move data process: -113 Component: File Group: File: C:Users[User]AppDataLocalTemp IXP000.TMPdata1.cab” *** 2) I navigated to the temp folder to investigate: C:Users[User]AppDataLocalTemp IXP000.TMP I discovered it was completely empty. It did not have a single file. *** 3) I extracted “namasol.exe” using 7-Zip and copied the files (see list below) to the C:Users[User]AppDataLocalTemp IXP000.TMP directory: _INST32I.EX_, _ISDEL.EXE, _setup.dll, _sys1.cab, _user1.cab, DATA.TAG, data1.cab, lang.dat, layout.bin, os.dat, setup.bmp, SETUP.EXE, SETUP.INI, setup.ins, setup.lid *** 4) I launched the file “SETUP.EXE” from the IXP000.TMP directory: The installation finished without error and “Námasōl, ISIS GUI” appeared in the Start Menu *** 5) I launched “Námasōl, ISIS GUI” and received the following error: “The program can’t start because libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” *** 6) I had no idea what libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll was so I started doing internet searches and discovered it was part of the “GTK Toolkit” (GTK+): So, I downloaded GTK+ from a SourceForge site. *** 7) I launched the GTK+ installer and selected the “Compatibility DLLs” option: The description of the option said “DLLs for compatibility with older or incorrectly packaged programs” *** 8) FINALLY! SUCCESS! The program now launches without error.
